To bad they did not make the PDP-11 as 18 bits rather than 16.
The 18-bit and 36-bit data paths are fine for the FPGA internals.
Xilinx multipliers, for example, are 18-bits wide and block memory is
18-bits wide but it gets to be a real pain when you need to interface
with off-board memory which is usually 16-bits or occasionally 32-bits.
