I guess this isn't so surprising; the terminal mode is probably only
considered a stopgap measure until you can configure the X Window

The terminal works, but any escape characters just get
printed to the
screen. If I set it to any VT type, at least backspace works.
You'd be surprised how much code it is to support the full VT100
escape sequence set :-).
