Fair question -- I didn't bid either, but
sniping *always* happens, so I
actually get irritated at people who bid early because all they do is
drive
the price up, with no chance of winning.

Nonsense. If they were sniping, they would drive

the same. Sniping doesn't prevent other people from bidding, it just
means you only bid once at your maximum.
There is a difference. Bidding "early" (i.e., not at the last minute)
publicly reveals that there is more interest in the item, and influences
the bidding behavior of others (including snipers) more than sniping at the
last minute can. It's unclear just how much effect this has, but I'm
fairly certain that it's non-zero.
