I don't know if not being bi-directional stopped printers working, I
think you just got better performance if it was bidirectional.
No idea if the new printers have anything besides USB,
or if they
emulate the old HP laserjets anymore.
It's a shame really that the USB->Printer protocol, is a closed paid for
standard, as it should be really simple to use a USB enabled
microcontroler to sit on the paralell port and interface it to a USB
printer.
