FWIW, I have a Weller soldering station, and it has performed
flawlessly for 15 years. I had to replace the tip once, I think.
I also have one of the Radio Shack "stations", and it similarly has
had no issues over the years.
Cheap pencils are just that: cheap pencils. Like the wooden ones you
write with, they have a limited service life, and once they get used
down to the nub, you throw them away.
