 They are about as viciously proprietary a dinosaur as you can get. 
Exactly.  They are, however, well-respected (in suitable circles, which
is an equally necessary caveat for any such statement).  I was citing
them _because_ they are, as you put it, viciously proprietary - I was
trying to point out that being "a very well-respected organization" is
not particularly relevant to actual openness.
