Indeed. Even the ones that explicitly state that they support PCL or
Postscript often do so only through a driver that does all of the
interpretation.
Perhaps one of the Xerox Phaser printers might offer something along
the lines of what you're looking for. I've got a DocuPrint N2825
here that I've driven with MS-DOS.
There are bidirectional ECP/EPP cards for the ISA bus kicking around,
so bidirectionality shouldn't be an issue.
