I sometimes took one, but laptops are (or were, then) relatively big
and heavy & I could not assume connectivity. It was far simpler and
lighter to carry a small toolkit and a zip-up pouch of floppies
containing essential tools and drivers. Later this was supplemented
with a CD, then a wallet of CDs, then the floppies got pensioned off.
Later, it shrank to a USB key. Now I rarely use that - most stuff can
be grabbed online, but it's still handy to have.
