want to understand all this and
see any intransigence that can be portrayed as irrelevant or anti-social
in some way as a sign of compulsive, fascistic, control-freak tendencies

All I remember is that when I met Stallman at Linux World in San Jose a
couple years ago, he was a complete dick, whereas Eric Raymond was way
cool, and Linus Torvalds, even though he seemed a bit agitated because he
probably had a very busy schedule and had his wife and two kids at his
side to tend to, still took the time to pose with me for a picture.
Maybe so. And maybe he should be commended for his restraint.
