Never used a Kalok then? Those things were nasty...
It's pretty surprising how many drives I don't remember because they had
such a short working life. JTS was one of the first Indian-made drives and
didn't even have the industry-standard drive dimensions (was too long by
about 1/2"). Seagate isn't infallible, either. I have a few of the
ST15230WC 4GB 3.5" SCSI drives. Miserable, hot-at-as-a-pistol drives. I
think I still have every Conner (under 500MB) that I ever purchased. There
were some bright spots in other manufacturers lines--the WD 31200 Caviar
drives were a bright spot in an otherwise dim line. Lots of dim
spots--the early Quantum XT-era MFM drives (e.g. 30MB) weren't bad, but
the Bigfoot IDE were awful, regardless of type.
I'm trying to remember what size Conner came in the Aspen Alpine AXP
systems. The Alpine is a 21064 EB64+ clone with onboard NEC/Symbios
53C810, and both of mine came with a 4200RPM Conner disk. I *think* 1GB.
With no other upgrades, putting in a 5400RPM Seagate got me a 20%
overall performance boost.
