Nope, not on a sun3...no Open Firmware, no "ok" prompt. There's no way
to
probe devices from the ROM on a sun3. Aside from just trying to boot from them
one-by-one, that is.

Thanks, I should have known it was a stupid question ;-)
I thought that I had one externl disk drive and two tape drives so I only hooked up the
disk drive. The one box with a tape drive in it also has sd0 inside. Now I have got that
plugged in as well it all works apart from the extra tape drive which I haven't
connected yet.
There is also no panic about the forgotten root password as whoever decomissioned the
machine set it to null. It is a good job that I just tried logging in as root out of
curiosity before going to the effort of bypassing the login and resetting the password :)
It looks as if sd0 is 100Mb and sd4 appears to be 270Mb with penty of free space on
both.
According to uname -a it is running SunOS 4.1.1
