I have just got back from a 680 mile round trip to collect a free Sun 3/110 along with
various external drives and a monitor (which may be reepairable). I will post full
details when I have got it all out of the car and found out exactly what it all is. I am
also going to have to dive into my SunOS manuals to find out how to boot to single user
mode and reset the root password as it has been forgotten by its prevoius owner.

I think you're looking to do a 'boot -s', at least that is what you do on a
Sun 4 and newer. Does a Sun 3 let you do a 'Stop-A' to drop to the 'ROM
Prompt'?

Thanks to you and Chuck for your answers. Yes Stop-A does work as it does with my 386i,
how do I get it to tell me what devices I have available from the ROM prompt?

Look at them :-) Actually the 3/110 just predates the OpenBoot stuff. While
there is some forth buried in there somewhere its not to easy to find.
Generally on the 3/110 there were *no* internal devices so if nothing is
hooked up then there is nothing to boot from.
Typically the three boot choices were:
xy() - boot from SMD drive
ie() - boot from the net
sd() - boot from a scsi disk.
The standard scheme is device(channel, unit, subunit)file
since you probably don't have multiple interface cards channel will always
be 0, unit is typically '3' for SCSI disks, or 6 for SCSI CD roms, XY use
unit 0 or 1 typically. And subunit if you've got multiple devices on a
controller (SMD drives often had two so you had xy(0,0,0) and xy(0,0,1))

Thanks, I should have known it was a stupid question ;-)
I thought that I had one externl disk drive and two tape drives so I only hooked up the
disk drive. The one box with a tape drive in it also has sd0 inside. Now I have got that
plugged in as well it all works apart from the extra tape drive which I haven't
connected yet.
There is also no panic about the forgotten root password as whoever decomissioned the
machine set it to null. It is a good job that I just tried logging in as root out of
curiosity before going to the effort of bypassing the login and resetting the password :)
It looks as if sd0 is 100Mb and sd4 appears to be 270Mb with penty of free space on both.
According to uname -a it is running SunOS 4.1.1

Nope, not on a sun3...no Open Firmware, no "ok" prompt. There's no way
to
probe devices from the ROM on a sun3. Aside from just trying to boot from them
one-by-one, that is.

this from the boot prompt of course. The 3/110 was known as the "prism"
inside of Sun as it sported the fancy new color frame buffer. Like the 3/75
before it, it took multiple VME cards, although I believe it's got four
slots to the 3/75's 3 slots. The same box was used when the "Cobra" came
out which was the first SPARC desktop implementation (called a Sun 4/110).
The nicest version of the OS to run on the 3/110 was SunOS 4.1.3 (some
would argue 4.0.2 but I digress)

4.1.1_U1 was the last release of SunOS to support the sun3 family.
