Snagged this (just too cool to pass up) a few days ago, it's a rather
large expansion unit for the TRS-80 Model 100 (basically attaches to the
bottom of the unit, adding an extra 1.5" thickness) that contains 128K
of bubble memory (and takes an extra 7 AAs for power...). The only
markings on it are a label on the front that says "Sound Sight."
I have the ROM (which I'll attempt to dump once I can build an adapter
for it) but no instructions. I've found a tiny bit of information on it
("CALL 63012" is a magic incantation to invoke the ROM) but nothing
else. Anyone have any info on this?
Thanks as always,
Josh
Does anyone know exactly what was in the Lobo branded "SASI" external hard
drive? I've managed to convince my Max-80 to talk with a 10MB MFM drive
behind an Adaptec ACB-4000 bridge controller. It formats and verifies
without a complaint, accepts bad sector information and creates a working
CP/M volume. But, for some reason I cannot get it to boot from the hard
disk.
It won't be the end of the world if I have to cold-start from a floppy,
but my curiousity is getting the better of me. The utility that writes
the boot sectors works fine - there's a brief flicker of drive activity
and no error messages. When I set the DIP switches to cold-boot the hard
disk, I can see the busy LED on the bridge board light up solid and the
machine freezes. Under normal I/O, the drive activity LED illuminates at
the same time as the one on the ACB-4000, but at boot I never see the
drive itself respond.
I'm assuming that there's some incompatibility between the ACB-4000 and
the boot PROM. It would help to know what it's expecting to see. I've
been digging through the boot ROM sources, but nothing jumps out so far.
FWIW, I've tried an Adaptec ACB-5500 controller (same results), a Xebec
1410 (won't format or verify, but can be written/read) and a Xebec 1410A
(I/O errors).

Hello Gene,
Question...can you transfer some old college files from
an IBM Display Writer floppy disk?? If not, can you refer me
to someone.
My mother recently passed and I had 'letters to home' that were
stored on this old, large floppy disc from the Display Writer.
Much appreciated,
John
Hi all,
As a small group of Vintage Computer enthusiasts we have come together to
start a Vintage Computer & Homebrewing group here in Switzerland.
We intend to meet once a month with a presentation/demonstration of a
specific topic, and have a general get-together afterwards. The inaugural
meeting is on January 15th, and the topic will be Homebrewing and the N8VEM
project, including an overview of vintage CP/M software that runs on it.
Anyone who's interested is very welcome. We meet in the Hackspace Lucerne (
laborluzern.blogspot.ch) and the calendar for the next three months will be
--
- Wednesday Jan 15th, 20:00 - Homebrewing & the N8VEM Project
- Wednesday Feb 12th, 20:00 - Apple-1, Kim-1 & design of modern replica's
- Wednesday Mar 12th, 20:00 - Hacking the Dragon 6809 computer
More details are on our web site http://vintagebytes.ch/ .
We look forward to meeting up with any of you living in the area!

All,
I think this isn?t ground-breaking, but it?s nice to see. Mac Plus websurfing, with some semi-modern hardware hacking.
http://www.keacher.com/1216/how-i-introduced-a-27-year-old-computer-to-the-…
I would recommend Kermit for the early file transfers over serial, or I have to second the Localtalk/ethernet converter idea as well (mine is Farallon); that might be another good route to transfer the initial set of software. Not sure why one couldn?t web surf over the Farallon box as well, but I have not tried that.
Another set of helpful information (with which y?all may be familiar already) is at:
http://www.jagshouse.com/#Jag's%20Classic%20Mac%20Site
claims 20,000 downloads, which is why I say ?Another? Mac Plus etc.

They don't, at least not unless you write your own driver, and even then
quite possibly not. I investigated these when I wanted to get my PROM
programmer working. They come with Windows printer drivers and don't
support ECP/EPP, so for any purpose except interfacing to a dumb
parallel printer they are useless.

With the PDP-11/23+, as I won't have the cabinet kit for it, does the

I'm assuming the pinout is documented in a manual somewhere as well,

Subject: Re: [N8VEM-S100:1808] S-100 68K CPU board V3
Hi John
Thought I would give an update - found the problem with memory - it turns
out pin 1 of U2 on the board had a cold solder joint - guess it finally gave
out. Reflowed the solder - the ground plane is a pretty big heat sink
around pin 1 and can easily get a cold solder joint. Any ways after
repairing that and playing with jumpers and switch settings I have 1 Meg of
memory working with the S100-68K-V3. I also have the oscillator at 16MHz
so the CPU is running at 8MHz and is a buss master. I am using the short
S100 mother board from the group so it may have better noise immunity than
the 22 slot mother board like you are using. I will do some more testing
and want to boost the memory to at least 2 Meg for some experiments. I
will get started next on the new monitor and getting data to load from the
IDE CF card. Looks like I am on my way to getting CP/M 68K ported. I
have a little clean up to do in a couple of areas (upgrade to latest
compiler code, etc).

I have my HP-150 cleaned up now. I also have a 9121 with two single-sided
floppy disk drives. I have cleaned them up, unblocking the eject mechanisms
gummed up with dry grease.
Now I want to get the system running. I have found the disk images on the HP
Museum site. They are Teledisk images. I had not come across this program
before, so I set up a DOS machine and tried using Teledisk to write to a
double-sided double-density disk I have. It seemed to work, getting to the
last track and then complained about the disk drive not being ready. I tried
the disk in the HP-150 in any case and it booted up ok, although I think one
of the files may not have been right, so perhaps the disk is not fully
written.
I wanted to convert the TD0 files to IMD format (Dave Dunfield's ImageDisk
program) as that is more legal than using Teledisk, but ImageDisk seems to
struggle reading the floppy disks that I managed to create with Teledisk.
Has anyone converted these TD0 images to IMD already?

Hallo,
I'm clearing out some duplicates and mismatched material from the JHU ACM's
collection of old stuff that I try to call a "museum". All of this is, at
the moment, located in Baltimore, MD; local pickup can be easily arranged.
Bringing things to Pittsburgh is also an option, though you?ll have to
tolerate some latency (I?m infrequently at CMU, so?).
The current list of materials is available at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqVSp8UyoZ_bdDFGXy1JTWlfZ2FLMX…
I?ve tried to be reasonable about initial asking prices, mostly going by
what?s up on eBay right now. If I?ve wildly missed the mark, please let me
know. Speaking of eBay, these are going up there eventually, but I thought
I?d offer the mailing list first.
Dead Trees and Media:
Most of the dead-tree part is comparatively un-interesting or common, and
so I would be happy to part with it for the cost of shipping and an
entirely optional donation (can you spare $1?) towards the museum's
efforts. Some appear not to be in any of the archives I know of; I'll cover
shipping them to you for a promise that they end up there, if that's the
case. :)

Hi,
Ever since I first saw them at the University where I worked in the late
80's and early 90's, I wished I had one to experiment with myself, but they
have neither gotten cheap nor plentiful over the years. My first computers
ran CP/M, SCO Unix, then SunOS on a SPARC-4/110.
So my 11/53 just arrived, and my 11/73 is on it's way, both in BA23 chassis.
Inventory of the 11/53 is:
KDJ11-D/S CPU
Dataram 4093 with 2MB RAM
RQDX3 controller
The power supply checks good, the cabinet is remarkably clean inside,
and I get the countdown from the console port, then it tries to boot
>from a TEAC drive I had that matched the smashed one that came with the
system. No network card in this one, but the 11/73 will have a Delqa
with it.
I'm pleased there are still so many links that haven't expired to
documentation, and nice web pages and youtube videos by others like
myself who have resurrected these systems.
I wish I hadn't thrown out all my MFM drives, years ago when I moved, since
I don't think I can do much more until the 11/73 with a hard drive shows up,
and that machine will have the Delqa card too.
I have some questions that I have either not been able to answer, or for
which I've found confusing answers.
- What are the rules for cards & slots in a BA23?
- If I wanted to get bsd2.11 running on either of these, do I need an
additional board with some kind of RTC, or some other hardware than I
already have? (I see comments about an MXV11-B, at least for 11/23 users?)
- I can't find a Dataram 4093 manual online. I might never need it, but I'd
like documentation for all the cards in my system.
- Is there some kind of diagnostics I can perhaps use PUTR to copy onto
a bootable floppy, that would do further hardware tests? I'm not even
clear if the ROM power-on memory test is thorough.
I've found useful references from hobyists working with similar hardware:

Hi,
I'm currently trying to start one of my M40s for the first time since
over 5 years, and it doesn't boot.
I had the 8" floppy drive removed in order to image the floppies on
a PC.
Now I've put it back into the M40.
But it doesn't boot anymore, it just says 3 numbers: "4 5 8".
I assume these are indicators of failed startup tests, but I cannot find
information about what these numbers actually mean.
Does anyone here have some documentation about the M40,
most preferably hardware documentation or a service manual?
Any help would be appreciated.
regards,
chris
I've got a PDP-8A w/32K of core memory that I'm bringing up. For quite a
while I couldn't examine/deposit to anything but field 0 using the
programmers console. Pressing "000X" LXA never changed the field digit.
But by accident I tried doing an LXA with "3333" as the operand and it
started using field 3!. A little experimentation revealed that LXA was
using the tens (eights?) digit to set the address.
Now this PDP-8A is a 620 which means it really has the PDP-8E board set.
From reading the 8E maint manual when a load field is done on that machine
bits 6-8 of the switch register set the instruction field and 9-11 set the
data field. But the 8A user manual says that entering "0003" LXA should
work.
So it would seem that the 8A programmers console or the M8316 module needs
to replicate the lowest digit of the value entered into the tens digit to
work correctly. I can't see where that is done from looking at the
description or schematic.
Can anyone with an 8A programmers console verfiy that just entering "000X"
LXA sets the address to XYYYY (where YYYY was set with the LA button)?
Thanks,
Marc
Hi! Thanks everyone! There are enough pre-orders to warrant a PCB
manufacturing order so I made one today for the S-100 buffered prototyping

be plenty left over for any late comers.

I have just collected one of these machines. I don't know a lot about them.
It seems they use a customized version of MS-DOS. Does anyone have a copy?
I have inspected the PSU in the base unit and there are no obviously swollen
capacitors, but it is 30 years old. Not sure if I should try applying power.

Ladies and Gents,
Exhibit registration for the Vintage Computer Festival East "9.1" is now
open: http://www.vintage.org/2014/east/exhibit.php.
The show is April 4-5-6 at the InfoAge Science Center, in Wall, New
Jersey. However the exhibits are open only on April 5-6. (Friday is

This will be the largest VCF East ever, so register your exhibits early!!
I still have six (6) of the S-100 bus extender boards left if you are
looking for them.
http://s100computers.com/My%20System%20Pages/Extender%20Board/Extender%20Boa
rd.htm
The PCBs will be $20 each as per the usual arrangement. Shipping in the US
is $3 for a single PCB and $2 for each additional PCB. Shipping
internationally is $10 for a single PCB and $3 for each additional PCB.
This is for the bare basics USPS first class postage with no tracking or
insurance. The builder assumes all risk of delivery as per usual
arrangement.
Please send a PayPal to LYNCHAJ at YAHOO.COM with the subject "S-100 bus
extender" and I will send your board(s).
Thanks and have a nice day!

PS, I am also accepting pre-orders for the S-100 buffered prototyping boards
and will be making a manufacturing order soon. All the details are the same
as the S-100 bus extender except send a message with "S-100 buffered
prototyping board" as the subject.
Hi,
I have started restoration of a PDP-8a model 8A420-CN. I doesn't have any
schematics for this machine and I have searched internet for sources
without any luck. The sets on
http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/dec/pdp8/pdp8a does not include my
version.
My machine came with 16K*12bits core memory, 20 slot backplane and only
the "Limited function board" frontpanel (don't now if this machine ever
had the "Programmer's console").
This is how my "Power distribution board" looks like:
http://www.abc80.net/docs/pdp8/pdp8a/DSC_2118.JPG
Some questions:
1. Is there anybody that could help me with schematics on this machine?
Scans are preferred, but I can pay for paper prints. I'm especially
looking for a diagram that matches the "power distribution board" that I
got.
2. If I plug in the machine with only the regulator boards (2xG8018) and
the limited function board in it, should the lights and fans come to life?
3. I suspect that my model shouldn't have "Power distribution board
control", G8019 since my "Power distribution board" misses the connector
for this board. Can that be correct?
Any help is appreciated. PPD-8a is new to me, but I have some knowledge in
the PDP-8 architecture since I restored a PDP-8/L that was in really bad
shape.

I recently "saved" a small pile of VT220 and VT100 terminals from a
barn in western WI. They were grubby and have various issues but I am
enjoying cleaning them up and making a few good ones from some bad ones.
One of the VT220 is a very new vintage unit. Circa-1987, with some
components with date codes 1990. It has a totally different logic
board than earlier models I've worked on-- this one having a large PLCC
package in the center of the board which I assume is a custom device
integrating the video controller and much of the support logic since
there are considerably fewer parts on this board than the older ones.
Still an 8031 CPU though.
This unit also has a totally different video monitor circuit than the
older ones and my problem lies somewhere on that board-- I am getting
a very dim image even though the CRT itself appears to be in very good
shape with no burn-in and otherwise crisp display. I think I've got a
high-voltage problem but without schematics to match this board, it's
kind of a crap shoot to start debugging.
So, wondering if anyone has newer schematics or technical reference for
the VT220 than we find out on bitsavers? The bitsavers docs are circa-
1983 so I am looking for something 1987 or later when it appears they
did a considerable redesign of the guts of this terminal.

I've come across a small pile of old Commodore stuff. I don't really want to ship any of it at this time, as I don't have any boxes or other packing material, and it takes lots of time and effort. But I will eventually if I have to, or if you throw enough money at me.
Operational status currently unknown. I will power-up the Amigas on Tuesday,
Pick-up or local delivery (92656).
Not for resale:
1. C64, C128
2. Amiga 500, 1000, 2000, 3000. The 500, 2000, 3000 have hard drives, but no other expansion cards.
3. Miscellaneous floppy drives, Commodore monitors.
4. No C64/128 software, but over 100 Amiga floppy disks.
I've put a HP-85B with a QIC40 modified tape drive on ebay.
It starts with 1,- so everybody has the a fair chance.
If you win tell me you're a list member and I'll put some extra's in ..
Item is placed in the Netherlands, item number 370957485834.

I saved two of these Pinnacle Prizm Video Workstations (they are a special FX and 3D add-on for the Pinnacle workstation from around 1994) from being scrapped a while back, basically to see what they were. I haven't had any luck finding the matching video workstation locally, and they're big and heavy, so I want to get rid of them.
Free pickup in Brisbane, Australia. If there's no takers for the complete units I'm happy to ship parts/boards for cost, but keep in mind these are PAL machines not NTSC.

Hi all --
I'm working on restoring a pair of Thinker Toys Discus/2D disk drives
(8" drive enclosure with power supply, a-la:
http://collections.museumca.org/?q=collection-item/20043152). I have
the complete manuals for the controller, but I can't find anything on
the drive enclosure itself; mine have suffered a fair amount of
corrosion and rust (fortunately limited to the power supplies, the
drives themselves are fine) and I'm trying to identify the voltage
regulators the power supply uses but they're so far gone the markings
are worn away.
Anyone have a schematic for this? Bitsavers has the schematic for the
original Discus, but not the /2D.
Thanks in advance,
- Josh
