A bit more eBay pimping....

Okay, couple of comments from the perspective of a long time (since 1997) US buyer and seller. The UK may be different. Take a look at completed listings for "Bernoulli" on the UK site for the computers/tablets catagory. The only similar drive that did sell was sold for 23.87 pounds with 10.68 pounds postage... and was sold as working from the US. I see 150 drive in the US sold for $1.00 with $9.99 standard shipping. the brief description is "USED Bernoulli Transportable Mega 150 MultiDisk Tape drive. Sold ASIS. Drive Powers up. Power cable included." So first, can you give it a brief checkout, even if only to say the power light does come on? From the listing checks I did, it is probably not worth your time to do much more than that given the actual selling prices and the few similar items sold in both the US and UK. Second, re your description. "I have not tested this - I used to use this type of media in the early 1990s but not since. This was my main external drive for some years, on a 486 notebook. I have no idea if it is still working or not!" That is fine as it tells the potential buyer almost everything they need to know. Since the cable is kind of important, you should mention specifically if it is included or not. The rest of the description could be shorted up a lot... only put in what is important to the buyer. On heavier items, I tend to like adding the total mailing/shipping weight. Most people have a pretty good idea of what those costs are, and adding it to the listing helps potential buyers to know if the postage is reasonable or not (to them.) In the seller notes about condition, take out the "Caveat emptor." It adds nothing but does add the idea that chances are this is junk and conflicts with your statement that it was working when you last used it. Your description has postage at 30 pounds while it is shown at 50 pounds in the search listings. Does the UK have an option for calculated shipping? And is shipping really that expensive in the UK? You have your visitor counter not showing publicly (not a problem) so I couldn't tell how much, if any, interest there was. After posting NASA's "open source" program to this list, I decided to download some of the "open source" software listed. To obtain the software I had to fill out a long form: "SOFTWARE USAGE AGREEMENT (SUA)" - which included an affirmation by me that I was a US Citizen, etc., etc. After filling out the form and submitting it, a few days later I got a terse reply: "Sorry it is for government release only". I wrote the author of the email and said that NASA had said on their website that it was "open source". The response was: "Thank you for your inquiry, However, STRS is labeled specifically as Government Purpose Only software. At this time it is only available for a Federal Government purpose use by civil servants or contractors with a contract number. In the future, if you have need for the software on a government contract, please feel free to contact our office again for the software." The author also included the following NASA Software Catalog (link below). As you'll see, very little of the software posted on NASA's "open source" site is actually "open source" as we know it! Most of it is "US Government Purpose Release". I now have Unix booting multi-user in FreeBee!

I have at last gotten Unix to boot to multi-user mode in FreeBee (Philip Pemberton's 3B1/UNIX PC emulator). The fixes required are for bus error handling (instructions were still sometimes changing memory and registers after a page fault even though I had already partially fixed it before; I now have it saving the registers before every instruction and pushing those on page fault similar to what current MESS does - this isn't actually what a real 68k does and may sometimes throw off register dumps but it does work; I also have it using longjmp to immediately stop any instruction that page faults), as well as zero page access (another thing that I had tried to fix before; I had previously only allowed reads from address 0, but some programs are expecting to read from higher addresses in the zero page, so I now allow reads from all zero page addresses). Another bug that I fixed was related to timing. The emulator was way slower than real-time on the non-Linux OSes that I tried (many of them impose a minimum on the amount of time a process can sleep, and the emulator was depending on being able to sleep for very short times, so I changed it to use longer sleeps). Unix would presumably boot multi-user without this fix though. However, the emulator is still not quite usable. The key mapping is not quite right (one problem is that the UNIX PC has separate "return" and "enter" keys, and there is no mapping for "enter", which is required to accept dialogs, and there might be other important keys that are missing). Also, neither the mouse nor the RTC are emulated yet. Here's a screenshot: http://imgur.com/GzWkUbs I'll post my patches very soon.

I have a VAX 4000-200 available. It has KA660 CPU, 2x16MB RAM boards, TK70&TQK70, KZQSA and a user-built-in HSD05 providing SCSI system disk support (see http://www.classiccmp.org/pipermail/cctech/2006-July/023485.html for how I did it). BA430 case. Working when parked, probably still does and I can fire it up and verify if wanted. NiCd cell removed from the bulkhead to prevent leaks, so date needs to be reset on bootup (but the bulkhead PCB isn't corroded!). Just got to the point where the space was needed and a VAXstation was able to take care of my VAX computing needs. Make offer. May consider trades for smaller gear as well. Also have a PowerMac 6100/60, Sun IPC (NVRAM problem), Sun SPARCstation 1+ and a Mac IIci (+5V trickle PSU problem) available if wanted for free - take one or all.

The hard drive gave up the ghost last night. It's making horrible bearing noises, and an attempt to re-initialize the disk and check for bad blocks overflows the bad block table almost instantly. It's dead, Jim. Not at all surprising, given its age. It may even be fixable, but I'm on to bigger and better things. I've started scoping out the work needed to build a hard drive emulator board that will connect to the WD1010 socket and behave like a storage subsystem, with an SD card and/or USB on the other end. The work is being helped tremendously by looking at Philip Pemberton's "3b1emu" source code, which implements an emulated WD2010 in software. If things go according to plan, I hope to have a proof of concept board kludged together on protoboard in a month or so. The spring that pushes the dummy felt head on top of the floppy disk had become a bit loose, and there wasn't enough pressure on the disk, so I got BOOT ERROR message. Looking for AT&T Unix PC software

After hunting for what seems like ages, I finally acquired an AT&T PC 7300 today. In most ways it's fairly modest (40MB disk, 2 MB RAM), but I was very excited to find that it does have the Ethernet expansion card installed. I reset the root password and got into the system. It has the TCP/IP drivers loaded, and I'm able to do marvelous things like telnet and ftp on my LAN. Remarkable! My concern is that I don't have the TCP/IP driver diskette, so if anything happens to the hard disk, that's that. Does anyone have a disk image they'd be willing to send me? Judging >from the FAQ, the part number is AT&T650008. I'd also love to find any other commercial software that was available. I could swear that there used to be archives of the stuff online, but if there were, I certainly can't find them now. Apple 2 Stuff

Folks, After using ADTPro I've been able to create disk images of several old Apple 2 disks. Hooray! However, there is the question of what to do with the images now. Many of the files are for the old word processing program Magic Windows. I can boot and read many (but not all) of these files in an emulator running Magic Windows. The Magic Windows files on the disks are binary and are in their own weird format; doing things like running 'strings' against them or opening them in a Word Processing program produces nothing useful. Is there an emulator for OSX that will emulate a serial or parallel port? That way I can "print" from within the Magic Windows program and the emulator will hopefully spool the output to a text file. FREE: TLV320AIC3106 audio codec and Schmartboard

While trying to wrap my head around soldering QFN chips, I managed to mangle a Schmartboard[1] and a Texas Instruments TLV320AIC3106[2]. My problem is that I impatiently omitted flux, which I don't currently have. The board and chip are crusted with solder in several wrong places. I would like to offer the chip and Schmartboard to anyone who thinks they can resurrect and use it. Cost is nothing -- not even postage. I have some international first class stamps lying around that won't otherwise get used. So, if you're gung-ho about soldering tiny things like this, please take these off my hands and out of my mind. I'll order some flux and more supplies and do this right with fresh materials. I need to part with my MicroVAX. This VAX actually comes in two cabinets, the main BA215 cabinet and the auxiliary BA215 / R215F storage expansion. Between both cabinets there are 4 hard disks: 1 RF72 (1GB), 1 RF71 (400 MB), and 2 RF30 (150 MB each). Pdp11 2.11bsd floppy direct access

I'm trying to figure out how to access an rx33 floppy disk on a pdp11/83 without going through the disklabel process. It would be nice if I could write a tar archive to a floppy with my Linux system, and extract it on the 11/83. Unfortunately, since the rx33 looks like any other MSCP disk to unix, it doesn't seem to want to access the floppy unless a disklabel (and file system) is present. I'm sure there must be some way to get actual raw access to the floppy drive under 2.11bsd, but I can't seem to figure it out, and I've spent some time looking through the ra device driver source. Frustration levels are high -:) Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Annual cross country hauling requests

The time has come up once again for me to cross the country, New York to California and back, and points in between, during the April and May timeframe. As usual, I am looking for opportunities to fund the trip by hauling equipment for people. I already have some deals in the works, but could probably use some more (especially in the return leg of the journey). Prices for my services are very reasonable, and I know how to handle classic computers in a nice safe manner, unlike many general freight shippers. So, please think about this and send me a note off list with any sorts of potential pickups and deliveries, and I will see if and how they can be worked into the plan. There is also a very good chance I will be making a trip or two to Chicago (from New York), and would have space going West. Not a single bid at one penny on eBay, so does anyone want to save a few of these from the bin? I have a box of about 25 TK-50s here, mostly 3M brand ones. No idea of working condition. Happy to send anywhere in the world for the cost of postage. I have hundreds of jiffy bags (padded envelopes) so not even asking for a donation for packaging - just post at cost. Through a random eBay purchase, I found a nice little collection of stuff in San Jose, CA near 880/101. The owner's name is Tom Thinh, and he's got a 10'x20' (-ish) unit packed with stuff he's trying to sell. He says he's been collecting the stuff for years. He seems friendly and reasonable to haggle with as a businessman. I asked him if it would be OK to pass along his information to the list, he was happy for me to do so. While I was there picking up an AT&T Unix PC, I saw the following: - Another AT&T Unix PC. - Some AT&T 3B2's. - A stack of pizza-box VAXen of various types. - MicroVAX I or II in a BA-123 chassis (couldn't see the badge). - A Symbolics 3610 [NB: I saw a keyboard, but didn't see the Symbolics console anywhere, but he says he thinks he has it in there... somewhere] - A BeBox. - A small army of NeXTstation - both color and mono, lots of monitors and keyboards and sound boxes. Also a couple of printers in original boxes. - Amigas (at least one 2000 and a 4000 with video toaster). - VT100 terminal. - Several Data General 9-track tapes (what looked like an A/OS distribution? DG is not my strong suit). Lots more. That's just what I remember. There were also random PC things and parts and manuals and so forth. And a segate(memory test) tidbit 2.5" thick (old laptop) drive that didn't do LBA but does 8bit transfer. I passed on all of them as I needed a minimum two and preferably the same. The 3660As and the Toshiba/IBMs fit the bill. The Toshibas were picked as they only needed 5V to simplify life further. The project is CP/M related. CPU will be Z80. WTD - 40-track (360K) 5.25in floppy drive

Hi guys, I'm trying to get my hands on a 5.25in double-sided 40 tracks per side "360K" floppy drive with the Shugart or IBM PC 34-pin connector (either edge connector or pin header is fine). Does anyone have a spare they'd like to part with? Slight preference for Teac or Mitsubishi, but anything will do at this point. I've checked Ebay, there are tons in the US (complete with "seller does not ship internationally, don't even ask"), but the only ones I've seen >from UK sellers are parts scalpers wanting stupid money for them (?149 "sold untested with no guarantee"? really?). A BBC Micro 40-track drive would also be fine -- as long as it's native 40-track, not 40/80 track switchable or double-stepping (an 80-track drive mated to a PCB which double-steps the head). Cumana, Viglen and a few other companies made these, they were extremely common a few years ago. I'm on the verge of getting DiscFerret write support working (at least for UNIX PC disks) but the sodding thing won't read anything my 80-track drives have written! Tape drive wanted

I'm looking for a reaonably priced tape drive in a Sun 411 enclosure w/ the scsi-2 cable and the terminator. Prefer one of the older style Archive150/250's , but could do with a an 8mm. As long as it can '>b st()' on an old '020 it will work... Bonus if you threw in a cartridge or two 8-). I 'd like to create a SunOS 4.1.1 boot tape. I could do a CDROM, but somehow it seems more 'authentic' to install it from tape!!! If anyone can help me out shoot me an e-mail off list. Hi, I posted the message below to a UK-based mailing list of hardware-fondlers, but didn't get any bites. Is there really *nobody* in the London area that fancies collcting a free fixer-upper x64 Sun box? --- I'm moving home shortly and don't have any short-term use for some of my Fine Legacy Equipment: 1) A Sun Ultra 20 M2. This is a dual-core ~2GHz Opteron, 4GB ECC RAM and some good video cards. A rather nice piece of kit when it was made in 2006, but rather behind the curve now. Worse, a recent attempt to install a SCSI card into it to read some old disks caused the thing to not want to POST. It did this before and started working again after a faff with the CMOS batter, but that didn't work and I didn't care to spend the time debugging it. Realistically, this is a source of a novelty case, PSU and spud brackets for a Sun-fancier who fancies putting a decent x86 box inside. It's a standard ATX case, so no epic case modding is required. This is arguably the pre-skip tat. Best offer wins, even if that is "I'll come to Mitcham and not charge you for dragging it away". 2) A whitebox 3U Opteron server. Two Opteron CPUs, RAM, hardware SATA RAID controller, and 10 hotswap drive bays. ISTR it has an optical drive, but I'd have to go and check. This *does* work (or at least did when I last tested it) but the power consumption is horrific. I bought this for the case/PSU, but never got round to transferring my home fileserver's guts into it. Now I have exactly 10 disks, there's no room for expansion so it's of limited use to me now. (I intend to go and buy a much larger case, probably the X-Case RM 424s[0] or one of its siblings.) The motherboard is again clearly junk, but the case and other bits still have value, so this is the pre-eBay tat which I estimate is worth around ?120. I'll offer a deep discount on this price to anybody who can again just collect it and not make me have to figure out how to ship the damn thing. Can anyone ID these old cabinets?

Morning all, Local junk shoppe owner asked me if I knew what these cabinets were, because he thought they might be computer-related, and although I have my doubts I said I'd ask here: http://www.patooie.com/temp/cabs.jpg The top one is about 18" wide and 18" deep, while the bottom one is more like 20" wide and 18" deep (all guesstimates with mk1 eyeball). The slots on both are about 2" high. Both have arms internally which are designed to slide the contents out partway when the doors are opened, and the arms on the green one are curved, suggesting that they held something cylindrical. Somehow they 'feel' too old to be computer-related to me - if I had to guess, I'd say they were maybe for canisters containing movie reels, but I suppose it's possible that they're far newer than I think and might be for some '60s or '70s disk packs / tapes / whatever... cheers Jules

Hi, has someone on this list ever tried to connect a WizNet module like the following to a UNIX system without any network stack and use it? http://www.wiznet.co.kr/Sub_Modules/en/product/Product_Detail.asp?cate1=&ca… I have an old SYSIII Z8000 System which has zero clue about "network" and I wonder if this could be changed by such a module. At least a kernel and a libnet which utilizes this driver have to be written which would be quite some work to get a "compatible" libnet at the end of the day. I guess at least "ping" would be doable then. For ftp, telnet and so on much more kernel work would have to be done I guess... Pseudo-Terminal support at least... plenty of work :( Greetings, Oliver

This was a very early and horribly priced bit to run X86 code on sun systems. Internally and elsewhere I heard is was called "What a Bunch of Idiots" Anyway some idiot has a cd he thinks is worth $599 on epay right now. I don't know that you could activate it w/o someone at Sun getting you a key, but even so it is a lot over the top. Found in my sweep for interesting "emulators". there is also a cd for "SoftWindows" for only $399. My original search w/o tuning used to sweep up some religious cult who used the term, as well as a huge number of folks who used the term to refer to something sold to defeat encryption on Satellite boxes. That business all died when the 8' dishes out on the farm gave way to Dish and the like with real encryption. Jim

FREE: (Seattle) Motorola EXORterm 155 (very dirty)

Got a Motorola Exorterm 155 terminal in kind of sad shape. Everything's there, but this thing was home to more than a few mice before I got ahold of it, and it'll need a serious cleaning and probably some component-level repair in the monitor and power supply sections. The logic PCB is unscathed (and uses the venerable Motorola 6800 CPU). Hello all. I'm a relatively recent list subscriber who has spent the last 3 months lurking and learning. Since my earliest computing experiences date >from the mid-1980s, I lack firsthand experience with a number of the systems discussed here, so I have sat back, listened, and kept my keyboard quiet.I would like to introduce myself, though, because one of these days I might have something to add to the discussion. At this point, I've managed to accumulate a few interesting machines, of which my favorites are a "chiclet" PET (which will be my maiden restoration project), an AT&T 7300 (in working condition and on its way to me now), and an IBM RS/6000 Model 140 (which is neither "vintage" nor rare, but I wanted a RISC/AIX system). Currently, in my "spare" time (i.e., not often enough), I'm working on restoring and patching some old gaps in my knowledge of basic electronics and circuit design. I think my desire to do that is primarily what motivated me to take up this hobby in the first place. For now, I'll just add that I currently live in NY, and I'm looking forward to attending VCF East, which will be my first VCF. Maybe I'll even get to meet some of you there. OK, I'm shy, so I'm just going to tiptoe back out of here now...

Motorola EXORmacs EPROMs: Already imaged?

Hey all -- As I'm in the process of moving stuff out of storage and into my new spacious(*) basement, I keep finding new projects and getting immediately sidetracked by them :). I dug out a Motorola Exormacs (68K development platform) machine that needed a good scrubbing and it's up and running again (mostly -- I have no disk hardware). This has a number of EPROMs in it and I'm curious if these have been archived anywhere. A cursory glance at the 'net hasn't revealed anything but before I go through the process of dumping all of these (and there are a lot) I figured I'd check here. Countdown to VCFSE 2.0

The Vintage Computer Festival Southeast (VCFSE) 2.0 is just five weeks from today! The show, put on by the Atlanta Historic Computer Society (AHCS) and the Computer Museum of America (CMofA), will take place in Roswell, GA on May 3 and 4. We selected those dates to make it easy for people to attend both VCF East and VCF Southeast this year. The venue will be the same CompUSA store building in Roswell GA as last year. This year's exhibit space will be greatly enlarged over last year, occupying the whole retail space of the store. About 2/3 of the space will be occupied by a museum display of personal computing artifacts from the Kenbak 1 forward. The remaining 1/3 of the retail space will contain hobbyist vintage computing exhibits. For those who missed last year or who would like to see it again, the highly-acclaimed Apple pop-up museum from last year's festival will again be available. The popular retro-gaming area and introduction to soldering activity will be available again. Speed faults and an RA82 disk

My PDP-11/84 came with an RA82 disk and after three years of work I have it finally coming up to speed and going ready. I had to redesign the circuit that generated a tach pulse for monitoring the speed of the spindle. At complete random the drive will throw both nonfatal and fatal speed errors however at no time can you hear that the speed of the drive has changed (and for error DA and error 26 you would definately hear it), nor can I catch the last moments before spindown on an oscilloscope as to see if the transistor is locking up or if there's some sort of interference. Again, it occurs randomly. I can be seeking or reading or writing or just idling the drive and it will happen and it makes the drive impossible to use. Could this just be me using too low speed a transistor or could this be something else that I have not yet considered? The reason I'm bypassing the original 74LS14 is that even when replaced it leaks about a volt onto the input pin and forced the signal high. I could not figure out a way to pull that down and still get the signal to come up properly so I simply removed it from the equation. -John

Osborne I almost ready! - Looking for disk images (double density)

Hi! I found and replaced a faulty 4116 ram chip: I used an oscilloscope to monitor pin14 (DOUT), and the faulty chip showed no activity at all... Now's the trouble: where can I found some disk images (double density)? My O1 has the DD upgrade. I found only a DD CPMSYS disk image, but it hangs after having loaded the HELP. The floppies which came with the O1 are almost unreadable. Only one could be read (by now). This disk boots the O1 in a minimal CP/M: setup works, xref works, but mbasic and cbas2 hang. I searched the web, but links have been outdated... Thanks!

You need to add either another dual board to this configuration, or an M9047 grant continuity card to fill up the space next to the SCSI controller. Once you hit slot 4, there can be no open slots in between boards. Tim

That means the boot ROMs in your CPU board don't have VCB-02 support in them. (Same as mine.) My notes show the device address was set to 777402 (Gee, that looks like an octal address. So much I've forgotten about VAX stuff...) I think the 3 LEDs come on at power up, and then go off in a quick sequence when the device driver configures it. Is this a VMS or Unix-derived system? I know VMS 4.7 had the drivers for the QDSS (VCB-02), but if you are using an older OS, not sure. As the boot ROMs don't support the frame buffer, you should not expect any display until the OS is up. Other than making sure the I/O address was set to a value so that the driver enumeration could identify the board, I did nothing special to configure it. Jon
