Why not disable the X login / xdm and login on the text
console for now?
Have you looked at the gettys in /etc/inittab? Maybe a getty is running
on the first serial port or can be enabled to do so...
All sorted now :-)
Pete sent me the xdm config files so I restored those back to a default
state. That, coupled with his suggestion of actually moving the shadow
file (rather than just tweaking the contents) did the trick.
Now that I've actually managed to get directly into the system, it's
clear that a large amount of data was mounted from remote filesystems
within the original home of the system, so I'm going to have to do a
fresh OS install I think. Now looking for IRIX 5.3 media (actually, I
have a couple of very good leads for getting copies already, so I think
I'll be OK there)
Thanks to you and Pete for your help!
cheers,
Jules
