BITNET revival? Or were there other uses for Jnet?
Was BITNET all 9600-baud synchronous modems or were there other (async?) links available
between sites?

I also recall Argonne (remember I worked under DOE contracts for a good while) having a
NJE suite for VMS and a little googling finds this (written, of course in Fortran!):

The above may or may not be the same as ANJE (I always thought... A in ANJE was for
Argonne! But I never connected NJE with ANJE, not being an IBM guy!)

The Hercules Mainframe emulator supports emulated Bi-Sync and HDLC over
TCP/IP. The "freely available" OS's also support bi-sync and HDLC but
not TCP/IP so it could be usefull usefull.

I think there were slower, and later faster links over Kilostream in the
UK...

BITNET revival would be fun. One could have used Jnet to turn a VAX
into a remote entry station of sorts too, of course.

Transport could have been nearly anything agreed on by the two ends of
the link. I don't remember when Princeton did VMNET (internet suggests
1989 or so), but that used TCP/IP connections.
