I believe that for text-mode operations (normal shells, etc) you can use
any 'normal' graphics card -- MDA, CGA, EGA, or VGA. It's when you want
to install X that things can get interesting.
Yup. But, IIRC, the real challenge of the v1.x days was getting
graphics to fly. Sort of tying in with another thread, There were damn
few stores where I would buy PC adapters then (95-96), because CrapUSA
and Worst Buy didn't grok my need to write down chipset & ramdac specs
to take home before I made a purchase. "Of course it's supported. RIGHT
THERE on the BOX! 'Windows95 certified!" Jeez. "Linux??? Is that a
game?"
