Indeed it does work as Johnny describes. I have such an RL02 (got it
from the Dutch Dec field service Org. when they cleaned
out their
warehouse). To enable/disable the RL01 compat mode, I have to flip
a switch which is only accessible when the topcover is open.

How complex is this modification? I have several RL02 and RL01 packs.
(My problem is actually the reverse, I only have an RL01 drive).

Hmm, you need an RL02 drive and a certain revision of the internal
controller board of the RL02. The modification is fairly straight
forward, from memory it changes 2 signal paths on the internal controller.
(Rev E, I believe, but not entirely sure).
