This is not a sales pitch, I promise.
My daughter is going to be selling PCB earrings at the upcoming
ECCC/VCFMW show, as she did last year. This year, she's asked how much
a cash register would cost, so she could look "professional" (she's 9,
it's cute, I know).
So, I thought: I have a tiny CBM-compatible 2.5" printer sitting here
doing nothing, a C64 or VIC is easy to pull off the shelf, wiring up a
small LCD is no issue, and I have cartridge stock to make an autorun
cart. But, I am lacking a cash drawer. I've looked online, but I'd
rather not spend $50-100 on something that has marginal utility...
Thus, I'm wondering if someone on list has an old beat up drawer (with a
spring and solenoid) they'd be interested in offloading inexpensively or
donating...

Make one, perhaps? For the amount of use it'll get, the latch mechanism
could be wood (along with the rest of the drawer).
I do have a 1950's-era Ohmer in the workshop at the moment - that's
entirely mechanical, but I could take some photos and measurements of its
cash drawer if you want (the springs on it are quite insane - but it uses
the spring tension to drive the display wheels when a sale is made; I
imagine that the drawer eject isn't nearly as strong on an electric machine).

I might have one...
I took apart a small cash register awhile back and am pretty sure I saved
the drawer. Finding it might be another story.

Ahh, crap! I just junked out a complete Panasonic electronic register
that took a power hit, about a month ago. Wish I had known, I could have
sent it to you just for the shipping. I'm sort of limited on space here
though, and never really thought about keeping it around for parts.
Sorry 'bout that. Sounds like a cool project though. :)

try hitting up local arts groups? or hacker maker spaces? or a farmers
market they might be able to lend or rent one out for cheap

I can't find the drawer I thought I had. I found most of the other parts
to the cash register -- but not the drawer. I'll let you know if I happen
to find it, but I think I probably tossed it.

I used an Epson HC-20 (JDM version of HX-20), with built-in receipt
printer.

What's your timeframe?
Right now, I have a small to medium (about 8x11?) cash drawer INSERT, plus
locking removable lid (it holds the money in slots/compartments; you set
it into a drawer and remove the locking lid.) I have at least 2 handy
right now, and at least 2 more with a little digging. Some of them still
have the spring loaded arms that hold the bills down. You could use it as
the drawer part, and hollow out a Packard Bell to make the outer sleeve -
I'd usually suggest hollowing out a 5150, but that would easily hold 4 of
them. Or, for her use, you could make the outer sleeve out of some
motherboards nailed to plywood.
I also have one large and one medium sized complete drawer assemblies
(exactly what you are looking for - even beat-up, and previously used
exactly as you described), but they won't be available for at least a
month.
