Hi!
I'm trying to boot my VAXstation from CD-ROM since I don't have a tape
drive. It has an Emulex UC08 controller. The internal hd and an internal
MO drive are connected to the first port, to the second port I attached
an external Plextor UltraPlex 32.
I updated the UC08 to rom revision G143R, just to be sure and configured
a cd-rom drive on the second port, scsi id 1.
When I try to boot from the CD, it is ejected after a few seconds and
nothing more happens. Every time i put the cd back in it is ejected again.
The same happend when I tried a old SUN caddy CD drive (Sony OEM).
Any hints?

Does that drive support 512-byte block mode? If so, do you need to change a
DIP Switch? Many of the Plextor drives that support 512-byte blocks need a
switch set. Some older Toshiba CD-ROM drives also support 512-byte block
mode and will switch to it automatically when needed.
Unless your controller does something special to circumvent it, you need a
CD-ROM drive that supports 512-bytes per block mode. Hope this helps,

is happier with something like a Zip drive attached to it. I think the
Zip drive would show up like a regular hard disk. With a little work,
if should be possible for someone to send you a disk with enough of a
NetBSD install to get the rest of the system installed.
Back in the 1.4.x days, I could /just/ fit a full install of NetBSD/vax
on a Zip 100 disk for booting my VAXstation 3100s. :-)
Since the lack of a tape based installation has gotten a lot of
discussion here in the past year or so, I'm going to try to tackling
that for the 2.0 release.

I don't have any ZIP drive or similar. As I just wrote in another post I
tried dd'ing the cd to a harddisk and boot that. Only the Ultrix
installer made problems.

similar problems with Ultrix/MIPS. I made a raw copy of the CD
to a disk (you can try the MO too) with dd(1) on an other machine.
It instaled from that disk just fine.

I had similar problems with Ultrix/MIPS. I made a raw
copy of the CD
to a disk (you can try the MO too) with dd(1) on an other machine.
It instaled from that disk just fine.
Same works with VMS as well. To get a decent copy of VMS loaded on my
MicroVAX III I had to boot off of a dodgy RD54, transfer the CD image via DECnet from an
Alpha, and write it out to a RA71. It took half of forever to do everything, but it
worked great. If my MicroVAX III had SCSI, it would have been a *lot* simpler :^)

I can boot the Ultrix installer from a harddisk however. The installer
complains about not being able to find any usable distributon media (I
can look up the exact error message if needed). I suppose he is looking
for a tape or cd drive...
I never installed Ultrix so I have no idea if I can fix this problem or
install the system manually circumventing the installer.
