I did look at the heads - There was more than a little oxide on the upper head; it looked like a rusty rasp had been drawn across it. I destroyed a 12-sector f pack. I still have the 16-sector pack that came with the drive when that company bought it (but they used PDP-11s, not PDP-8s, so it sat on a shelf the entire time they owned the unit). I never have been able to see what's on this pack; the only 16-sector pack I own (I don't have an RK8E, just an RK11C and RKV11D). Mostly, I've used RL01/RL02 drives on OMNIBUS/Unibus/Qbus machines that didn't have an MSCP controller. Never had an RL drive die on me.
