After hunting for what seems like ages, I finally acquired an AT&T PC
7300 today. In most ways it's fairly modest (40MB disk, 2 MB RAM), but
I was very excited to find that it does have the Ethernet expansion
card installed.
I reset the root password and got into the system. It has the TCP/IP
drivers loaded, and I'm able to do marvelous things like telnet and
ftp on my LAN. Remarkable!
My concern is that I don't have the TCP/IP driver diskette, so if
anything happens to the hard disk, that's that.
Does anyone have a disk image they'd be willing to send me? Judging
from the FAQ, the part number is AT&T650008.
I'd also love to find any other commercial software that was
available. I could swear that there used to be archives of the stuff
online, but if there were, I certainly can't find them now. Bitsavers
has the stock system software, for which I'm grateful, but not very
much else.

you won't likely get a good result. You certainly won't get a
*reliable* result, [...]
Well, I've never worked with an AT&T Unix PC. But on every Unix
variant I _have_ used, if you snapshot a disk that way you will be just
fine _provided_ that no write activity occurs during the snapshot.
This generally means either booting with it mounted read-only (usually,
single-user) or making sure the system is totally quiescent. Under
such circumstances, it's as reliably good as the state you'd get from
an abrupt power-down.
Is the Unix PC any different in this respect?

It's a stock standard Western Digital WD1010 or WD2010 format. 512 bytes
per sector, 17 per track but only 16 used (the 17th is a "spare" sector).

That'll be difficult if the system is running. The disk surface will be
changing as background tasks move stuff around. I'm not certain you can
boot it in single-user mode...
Booting off the Foundation "Floppy Unix" set (floppy boot and floppy FS)
is one option, but you won't have anything to transfer the data across.
You'd have to modify the Floppy Unix disk somehow to add Kermit or
umodem (UNIX PC's xmodem) and stty.

though one has UUCP and (if memory serves) TCP/IP installed.

I was quite surprised, believe me. The previous owner never used it,
didn't know anything about it. Neither did I, not even whether it
powered on or not. I got very lucky!

daughterboard for the WD1010 socket that will hold a microSD card and
act as a hard drive replacement. Much easier to pretend to be a WD1010
than to pretend to be an MFM drive (though, less authentic!)

I've always thought that was the way to go in terms of modern storage.
You may want to take a look at the FreHD:

It was originally designed for the TRS-80, but presents an interface
that's logically close to that of a WD hard disk controller. I talked to
the developer about a year or so back and he felt that it might not be too
much work to make it plug-compatible with a WD chip.

Ethernet or Starlan? They're completely unrelated cards, but commonly
confused, and the Starlan card is useless (IMHO). The Starlan card has an
Intel 82586 NIC chip, while the Ethernet has (IIRC) an AMD 7990.
There exists a really awful IP stack by Wollongong for the Ethernet card,
and no IP stack for the Starlan card.

Apparently you really do have the Ethernet card.
The software predates subnetting, so it decides what is on your local net
by whether the assigned IP address is class A, B, or C. Years ago I added a
"bozo-ARP" command to the Telebit NetBlazer router to "fix" that, by
having
the NetBlazer automatically proxy for any IP address in an ARP request but
not on the local subnet. The NetBlazer is now just as obsolete as the 7300.
Somewhere I should have an equivalent written to run as a daemon on BSD,
but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
Another problem is that the kernel doesn't have the select(1) system call,
so they fake it, in such a way that it only works on sockets, which was
enough to let them hack FTP and telnet to work in the most common cases,
but not a lot of other stuff. For instance, a program that does a select()
on both a socket and a tty will fail.

The technical manual has a pretty thorough description and
a schematic.? At first glance, there appear to be 5 PALs, but
nothing fully custom.? Most of the PALs are registered, but they
are mostly used for a state machine and the documentation
includes timing diagrams that look like they'd go a long way
toward reproducing the equations.? My copy isn't very good,
but I don't see the equations listed explicitly anywhere.

There are two expansion cards installed: The Ethernet card (with its

No. It's not so much a TCP/IP stack as a disgusting kludge. There's no way
to plug in a different link layer such as SLIP.

Well, I was able to get my full backup and full set of system software
disks made just in time. The hard drive gave up the ghost last night.
It's making horrible bearing noises, and an attempt to re-initialize
the disk and check for bad blocks overflows the bad block table almost
instantly. It's dead, Jim.
Not at all surprising, given its age. It may even be fixable, but I'm
on to bigger and better things. I've started scoping out the work
needed to build a hard drive emulator board that will connect to the
WD1010 socket and behave like a storage subsystem, with an SD card
and/or USB on the other end.
The work is being helped tremendously by looking at Philip Pemberton's
"3b1emu" source code, which implements an emulated WD2010 in software.
If things go according to plan, I hope to have a proof of concept
board kludged together on protoboard in a month or so. [an aside:
nothing ever goes according to plan]

New subject: More AT&T UNIX PC
I got one Olivetti AT&T 3B1 full operative. I got too the basic OS set
diskettes (Unix plus DOS tools are installed) but NOT the development tools
(C language).
I would like to purchase one complete set of fresh grabbed/burned diskettes
with this set of tools (or even complete, OS plus development tools) as a
sort of install/backup.
I live in Europe but shipment is not a problem. A bit high costs are
assumed.
I think that I got too one old but opearative MFM hard disk for this model
but I must check it.

Not at all surprising, given its age. It may even be fixable, but I'm
on to bigger and better things. I've started scoping out the work
needed to build a hard drive emulator board that will connect to the
WD1010 socket and behave like a storage subsystem, with an SD card
and/or USB on the other end.
The work is being helped tremendously by looking at Philip Pemberton's
"3b1emu" source code, which implements an emulated WD2010 in software.
If things go according to plan, I hope to have a proof of concept
board kludged together on protoboard in a month or so. [an aside:
nothing ever goes according to plan]
