When ever I
boot, before the Finder comes up, there's about 5 icons In the
lower left-hand corner. I know that one is MS Mail, and the other is for a
network. I'm not sure what the other icons are for. I'd like to get rid of
these programs (extensions?) that are running in the background, since all
they do is eat up memory. I can't access them after Finder opens, and
nothing happens when I click on them before it opens.
Any suggestions?
Well, they are either extensions or Contol Panels. Under the System folder
are two folders named "Extensions" and "Control Panels". Just drag
the
apropriate icons out of those folders and restart.
The alternative is to install an extension/control panel combo called
"Extension Manager". It allows you to turn them on and off at will.

If you do it manually, create two folders called Extensions (Disabled) and
Control Panels (Disabled), just for the sake of being organised. Those are
also the names the Extension Manager uses - you can obviously use any name
you like when you do it manually.
