No not yet. I'm going to try and get the parts and make a terminal
cable tomorrow.
You have to be REAL careful which way the pins go on that. I had to
make two of 'em because the FAQ (where I found the pin assignments)
wasn't really clear which way you should be looking at it. (They ended up
being opposite)
If the root
password is changed, your going to be screwed without system
disks.
I'm afraid you're right. That's the nature of Unix.

the machine; at which point it is near trivial to get root. :)

It has ver 3.51 onn it but it's looking for a password. Is there a way

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try them. I bought the 7300 at a
trift store so I don't have any of the disks or documentation or know any
of the account names. I expect a rescue disk may be required. hint! hint!

Ok, just send me your mailing address and I'll send you a copy. It's
really two disks, one with the same kernel version as you have (3.51)
and on with a stand-alone floppy file system with just a few programs
also from a 3.51 system. You boot off the one and then it will ask
for you to insert the root file system. Once you insert that disk and
hit return, you'll get a single user root prompt after a few seconds.
Then you can mount the hard drive:
/etc/mount /dev/fp002 /mnt
and edit the password file:
ed /mnt/etc/passwd
Once you're done, unmount the hard drive:
/etc/umount /dev/fp002
and you can reboot.

That would be great! I did get logged in as "install" but it wouldn't
let me edit the password file. My address is: Joe Rigdon, 2960 Lowery Dr.,
Oviedo, Florida, 32765.
BTW is there a way to tell if this is a 7300 or a 3B1, other than the
markings on the bottom of the case? The markings say this is a 7300 but I
was told that only the 3B1 has the hump in the case and this one has a
hump. The front label says it has a 40 Mb hard drive and du verifies that.

Yes, that is a 3B1. The 7300 had a 10Mb or 20Mb drive, no hump. The
3B1 had a 40Mb or 67Mb drive and a hump. There was an upgrade from the
7300 to the 3B1 and I'd hate to be the tech installing it -- dismounting
the monitor is a bitch. 3B1s generally had the later motherboard revs
and an extra fan, plus the power supply was beefed up -- those were NOT
part of the upgrade. There is an extensive 7300/3B1 faq kicking around,
gimme a second to xwindow over --

I went to an auction at KSC this morning and bought a complete Commodore
Pet computer system. They had a bunch of AT&Ts there, 3B2/400s and
3B2/600s. Should I have gotten those? I know who has them.

The 3B2 series are good solid Unix boxen and that's all they are. The
Western Electric 32xxx CPUs are _great_ devices for building telephone
switching systems, but for real computing they are flat-out dogs -- OK
for low-load database engines at best. But they are the machine that
were used to build System V Unix. As I said, they are solid, and there
are more Internet hosts built on them than many folks suspect. When I
have room, I will be adding a 3B2 or two to my collection. They aren't
related to the 3B1 at all except for the Death Star logo, but they are
definitely a big part of history second only to the DEC stuff for us
Unix junkies.

The FAQ (I think it is) has some discussion about the distinction between
a 7300 and a 3b1. The upshot is that there isn't much. As you point out
the most obvious distinction is the case plastic directly under the monitor.
All the 7300s I've seen have 1/2 meg on the main board and the only 3b1 I
have has 2 meg. It is my understanding that counterexamples to this
were manufactured, however. You'll also notice that on 3b1s, the power for
the disk drive is cabled directly from the power supply whereas on 7300s
the drive takes power from the main board. Whether or not the power supply
is actuly heftier for a 3b1 has been the subject of some debate. The FAQ
and the hardware notes found on the archive sites discuss this in more
detail.

Brian,
Did you forget to send the rescue disks? I never got them. I bought
three more 7300s with manuals and disks yesterday. One is a basket case,
one has power but won't boot and the other works but I can't get into it
even with the diagnostics disk. I got into the 3B1 that I have by using
INSTALL but install and tutor don't work on the new one. The previous owner
has forgotten his user name and password. If you can send me a rescue disk
so that I can get into this one I'd appreciate it.

Not addressed to me but-
1. You can break and enter an unfixed unixpc from the login prompt.
Or
2. If you have the 'System Software' you have the disks needed to take
control without reformatting the HDD.

Um, I'd be *very* interested in hearing the details of that, since I have
a 3B1 Unix PC attached to the Internet. If any random bozo can break it
from the login prompt, I'll have to remove it.
