Can I "force" an RJ11/12 cable into an MMJ jack? I thought I had an MMJ
cable, but I don't. I've got a 4-wire cable from an LK201 keyboard that
I can snap into the MMJ, but it doesn't fill the whole thing, so I
assume only 4 wires will make contact, which I doubt will work. If I
take a regular phone cord, break off the tab, and file the top smooth,
will it fit in the MMJ socket?

Yes, in fact, 6pin standard 'RJ12' connectors are how I make my MMJ cables
since I'm too cheap to try and find MMJ connectors and a crimper. The
middle four pins are the most important: TX+ TX- RX- and RX+. The outside
two pins (1 and 6) are for flow control.
Personally, I just use a pair of dikes (side-cuts) or end-cuts to trim
them off. If you have a R$ RJ45/RJ12 crimping tool, you can also use the
'cutting' (not stripping pair) razorblade to cut it off. That will cut it
off perfectly I've found.

I always get confused with this... Does a regular telephone cord cross
all the wires, as opposed to a standard MMJ cable which is straight
through?

It should, although with most telephones polarity doesn't make a bit of
difference, so check first. Just put the two ends next to each other, you
should be able to see if the colors are swapped on each end or not. If
you can't tell, and you have a flat cable, straighten in out. If both
ends are on the same way, it's crossed-over, if not, it's straight thru:

I did this with my VT-320; I melted the plastic on the
RJ a bit because without the tab it was loose in the
socket, so it's a tight friction fit. I wouldn't use
it in a biz environment, but it works for me.
