I remember a guy who desoldered EVERY chip from his
C64 (?), soldered in sockets, then pressed the chips
back in. Granted though this was at an electronic
facility, with all the proper gear.
But if you're replacing a chip, who cares what
happens to the old
one? In severe cases, I've taken a dremel to the
chip leads and
simply cut the IC body away for easy access.
