Does the IBM System 23 hold any value these days?
We FINALLY are off them (had one last application still running up until
about 2 months ago). So I can now start unloading the ones I have.
I am trying to decide if I should eBay them, or just give them away, or
<shudder> throw them in the dumpster.
I have 3 or 4 of the "all in one" units (screen, keyboard, dual 8"
floppies all in one box), and I have one "tower" unit (dual drives in a
tower box, screen and keyboard are seperate parts). I also have 3 or 4
printers.
Beyond the above descriptions, I know almost nothing about these things,
and almost as little about how to operate them... so they aren't
something I really care to "collect".
I will probably hang onto the tower unit and one printer (at least for
the next 7 years, just in case the IRS comes knocking and we need to get
info off the old software)... it was the last unit in service. The others
were being held as spares in case the tower died, but since we finally
got our one accounting application migrated to another system, I can
afford to get rid of the spares.
Anyone have any idea if I can got money for them, or should I just be
happy to find a home other than the big metal box the "dustcart" (<- too
much GTA3) collects twice a week.

Well, they are interesting in that they are arguably predecessors to the
IBM PC, and are in the same product line. I would like to have one but
the shipping costs would be too much. Unfortunately, I missed one locally
by a few months as the person who had it pitched the machine, but at least
kept the manuals for me.

I just looked through my system and maintenance manuals, and promo weight. This may be because the weight would vary a
great deal based
on whether it was a one or two disk drive system. From
personal experience in lifting my S/23, I would say a
two drive unit
weighs in the 70-80 lbs. range. They are not light, and they
are awkward to carry.
For those that are interested, the "all in one" unit is model 5322,
and
the tower unit is model 5324. You don't see the tower units
too often. About a year ago I salvaged a CRT from a
tower unit
display to replace a bad CRT in my all-in-one.

reason my wrap was set at 132 instead of the usual 72.

I'd guess the little 23's weight about 70-75 pounds. They're heavy. The
tower cases about 50-60 each. The printers, the same. Nasty little
babies to move around.

dimensions?

Hi Chris:
I already have a S/23 but what I am really, really desperate for is the I/O card for the
5246 external dual floppy disk drive. If
you have the drive, you have the card. Do you have the drive?
You may get $100 for a working S/23 all-in-one on eBay -- I think that's about what
the last one went for. But, packing and
shipping will be difficult. If you are considering tossing them, let me know first and I
will have my sister in Jersey drop by your
place for a pick up.
Also, do you have any software applications for the S/23, or more importantly, any games?
I would be really grateful if you could
copy some for me (and I would be happy to send you some blank floppies and compensate you
for your trouble). I have the basic
operating disks, but nothing else.
