Ed,
Once you have the unit reassembled and "ready to go", you should
close it up without a disk pack in it and run it with just the
blower circulation for a number of hours before you even think
about putting a disk pack in and spinning it up. This will help
purge out any dust particles remaining in the head/disk area...

The tolerances involved are much more critital
than the
RP06 or similar drives.
Due to the 'Burnished media' technology used on these packs,
the normal pack cleaning procedures tend to leave a residue
on the platter surfaces. The media requires a special power
wash cycle to insure that all the residue is removed. Again,
only a keen eye trained to recognize a media defect can spot
a problem inspecting a pack. CDC recommends a program of
media inspection at certain intervals but will not recommend
any cleaning. Therefore a clean environment and proper
storage of media to prevent pack contamination is strongly
suggested.

Ok, I'll NOT clean the head then.....
Interesting link, I'll print the docs out tomorrow at the office.
In the mean time, I did disassemble the blower section and cleaned part
of it (lots of dust). The motor is making a lot of squeeking sounds, so
I greased the top ballbearing, the bottom one is a little more difficult
do, as the blowerfans are covering part of the motor.....
Thanks,
Ed
