My favorite use for the 555 that I ever saw, was in a homebrew paper tape reader in Byte or PE in the mid-70's. The timing function wasn't used at all; only the Schmitt trigger function used. Default 555 Schmitt trigger action is at 1/3Vcc and 2/3Vcc; just brilliant! Tim.
