The BBS software that I ran, while not having that sort of thing as a
built-in feature, did include such a capability in terms of handing off
control to an external scanning program, and a great many sysops did indeed
do something of the sort, mostly before 1995 as well. I ran one starting in
1992, but didn't specialize much in dos stuff, and so I never bothered with
it personally.
