I will shortly be receiving a MicroVax 3100/90 and a TK50Z-GA tape drive.
Both have SCSI, and I assumed they would work together. However, I just read
something that seems to imply the TK50Z-GA is "incompatible" SCSI, and will
only work on the MicroVax 2000. Can anyone confirm this either way? If it
will work, what type of SCSI cable will I need - a standard one, or some
proprietary one? If it won't work, is there any way to "fix" the TK50Z-GA
so

My TK50Z-GA is working fine attached to a VAXstation 4000/60. I've
changed the SCSI ID on it a couple of times, and replaced the internal
TK50 very soon after I got it. The tape drive itself is simply a
regular TK50.
That said, all my VAXen recognise a 2G 4mm tape drive as a TZ06.
That's _much_ more fun to work with.

I feel much more comfortable now that what I'm getting will work.
I just want the TK50 basically to read some old tapes. Once they're
read, I probably won't need it anymore.

It can be made to work with a firmware (ROM ) upgrade if I recall..
why not just get an SZ12 expansion box and a TZ30 ??? the TZ30 is a better drive
anyways and is TRUE scsi.

Agreed, but TZ30s are darned hard to come by. As near as I can tell,
having a TZ30 will nearly double the eBay value of any system.

Really... geez. I have about 4 of them around here each in a Microvax 3100/40 or
3100/80...
