Hello all,
Today I was given a Digital LN03R ScriptWriter. This is a serial,
postscript printer. It started life as an LN03, and received the "R"
upgrade on 12/8/87. It is serial number 007 (NOT a typo), and I have been
told it may have been originally a prototype for the LN03 series.
Surprisingly, Windows 98 (and 2K) have a driver for it, and when I hooked it
up, the test page printed beautifully! The power-on page reports it is
version 47.2, as well as listing the fonts installed, and the setup.
What I need to know is:
1) Does anyone have docs for this printer that I could borrow long enough to
make copies of? At a minimum, I'd like the settings for the DIP switches on
the rear of the unit. It's set up now for 9600 baud, and that's a bit slow.
I'm hoping it can go faster...
2) Does anyone know where I can get toner, drums, and other consumables for
this printer??
3) Obviously DEC software would support this printer, but does anyone know
of any MS-DOS, or maybe even CP/M programs that would support this printer?

No... but one of the TOPS-10 manuals that DEC published in electronic form
has a description of the LN03 escape sequences, in case you want to write
your own software. I have no idea why DEC put the description in that
particular manual. If you're interested, I'll send you the file.

No... but one of the TOPS-10 manuals that DEC published in electronic form
has a description of the LN03 escape sequences, in case you want to write

The LN01 appears to have a subset of the LN03's functionality. In
particular it misses sixel mode, national replacement character sets and
character attributes other than underline.

A straight LN03 describes its own DIP switch settings on the test sheet.
Doesn't the LN03R? To get a test sheet, just press the "T" button on the
back of the unit.
The fastest speed is 19200.

Switch settings, from EK-OLN03-RM-002, "LN03 Programmer Reference
Manual". I presume that SP2-4 (Autowrap) will no longer have any
function because of the PostScript upgrade.
2.4.1 Switch Pack 1 (SP1)
Switch pack 1 controls the printer's interface type, baud rate,
and data format (7 or 8 bits). Switch pack 1 also enables or
disables parity checking.
Interface Type (SP1-1)
This switch is set to match the data communications interface,
either serial or parallel (future option).
SP1-1 Function
On Parallel interface

Baud Rate (SP1-2, SP1-3, and SP1-4)
These switches select the transmit/receive speed the printer uses to
communicate with the computer.

7 or 8 Data Bits (SP1-5)
This switch is set to match the character format used by the host
computer, either 7 or 8 data bits.
SP1-5 Function

Parity Enable (SP1-6)
This switch enables or disables parity. If enabled, the printer
checks the parity bit selected by switch SP2-1.

2.4.2 Switch Pack 2 (SP2)
Switch pack 2 controls the type of parity bit checked, the printer's
identification (ID) response, the autowrap feature, and XON/XOFF or
restraint protocol.
Parity Bit (SP2-1)
If switch SP1-6 is on, switch SP2-1 selects the type of parity bit
the printer checks for and sends.
In 7-bit mode, the printer can
- check for odd parity and send a space parity bit, or
- check for even parity and send a mark parity bit.
In 8-bit mode, the printer can only check and send even or odd
parity. Switch SP1-5 selects 7-bit or 8-bit mode.
SP2-1 Function

On Check odd, send space parity. Check and send odd parity.
Offf Check even, send mark parity. Check and send even parity.
Device ID Select (SP2-2 and SP2-3)
These switches set the printer identification (ID) response to LN03,
LQP02, or LA100. These switches are usually set for an LN03 ID
response, except when the printer is connected to a system that
requires an LQP02 or an LA100 ID response. These switches do not
affect the printer's response to control functions.

Autowrap (SP2-4)
This switch selects the method of controlling a line of characters
that exceed the right margin. If you select no wrap, the printer
drops characters exceeding the right margin. If you select autowrap,
the printer prints characters exceeding the right margin on the next
line.
The printer remains in this state, unless you send an autowrap mode
(DECAWM) sequence to override the switch setting. A soft terminal
reset (DECSTR) or a reset to initial state (RIS) sequence resets the
printer to the state selected by the switch setting. Chapter 5
describes the DECAWM, DECSTR, and RIS sequences.
SP2-4 Function
On Autowrap (factory setting)
Off No wrap
XON/XOFF or Restraint Protocol (SP2-5)
This switch selects XON/XOFF or restraint protocol for data
transmission.
SP2-5 Function Description
On Restraint Para. 2.5.4
Off XON/XOFF (factory setting) Para. 2.5.2
Restraint Polarity (SP2-6)
This switch selects the polarity of the restraint signal when you
use restraint protocol (SP2-5) for data transmission.
SP2-6 Function
