I remember reading about a public project (NOT Google) that is attempting to preserve discarded books. I think they were located in Oregon, but I could easily be wrong about that. You send them the books and they ship them to China to be scanned. They get the books back and then store the physical copy in containers (with nitrogen instead of air?) in a mine or cave somewhere .
