This is about 4mm tapes, and as we know is very dependent on the state
of the tape media, and the firmware / mechanics of the drive.
But it is a nice discussion of this guy's experiment.

There was a similar article about applying the same trick (killing power writing over the
EOD mark) on QIC tapes.

?You mean, it's ironic that Deja ran ads, but when Google bought Deja and
moved the usenet content to Google Groups, there were no more ads? I guess

The article didn't mention it (and the email address it gives now
bounces), but perhaps someone here would know - has anyone tried
demagnetizing (or remagnetizing in a not-normally-useful way) the
stretch of tape holding the EOD mark?
