I wound up getting an HP E-PC cheap, disconnecting the CD-ROM drive and subsituting a CF card for the hard drive (no swap partition). I can run Linux on it and even use it as a router without drinking a lot of power. While other devices like the Musicpal may be better candidates, the PC box gives me the most flexibility.
