I'm trying to add XT KB support to a project here, and I am having
trouble sorting out a few scan codes. A response over at the VC Forum
notes I should grab these two references, so I am wondering if anyone
has a link or soft copy.
I created my PS2/XT mapping using this matrix:

And that matches up with ChukG's AT2XT project, except for '\' (the link
has it as decimal 29, Chuck's project has it at 42, and he has 0x61 PS/2
code mapped to decimal 45 XT code. I don't know either of those codes.
But, that mapping does not match up with most of the maps on the net.

Probably making an ass of myself (I've done several keyboard drivers in SW but
have never hacked the HW protocol), but why wouldn't \ be 2Bh? That's what
it looks like to software (on a PC or XT, or on an AT/later with translation
enabled), and it's what the table on page 1-77 of the PC Tech Ref 2.02 says
(I have the original manual but nothing machine-readable, sorry).
The AT Tech Ref seems to say (on page 4-11) that the raw code is 5Dh (with an
0F0h prefix for "break"). They're talking about the 84-key keyboard, but
the
EKB would have to emulate that.

(I thought sure the SLT/286 was an XT KB, but it's AT, and my CBM colt
is AT as well...)

Apparently not -- that's where I got 2Bh (from the 5150 Tech Ref V2.02).
And he has it as 2a. (42)
I can't argue with results. If only I could resist asking what he has
for left shift (if *it's* not 2Ah). I think I almost did. It's late.

I think that may be because of international keyboards. Try

Also, consult the two documents (Microsoft has a very good whose links I
posted in my VC Forum response. In particular, note that AT-PS/2 key
45/scan code 61h is present on 102 and 106 key "international"
keyboards, but not on the standard US 101 key model.

If you weren't already aware,
MOV AH, 0
INT 16h
waits for a key press (other than any kind of "shift"), and returns with
the ASCII code in AL and the scan code in AH
Note that the BIOS will have had an opportunity to "process" the
information from the keyboard, and substitute a different ASCII code or
Scan code "for your convenience" (such as "correcting" a
non-standard
kayboard), converting duplicated keys into their legacy values, etc.
NOT FOR XT: function 10h does not do as much "processing", and will give
different codes for some duplicate keys
These are NOT the only BIOS functions for keyboard, and it is not hard to
go below the BIOS if you want to look for non-standard combinations, such
as differentiating between L, R, or both shift keys.

UNderstood. What's tripping me up is the MS ref shows |\ on 29 on US
kbs, 42 on intl kbs (some of them, others have <> on 42). Anyway, since
you send 42 all the time, you're sending the INTL version of the code
all the time, and I'm wondering if the PC deals with that internally, or
if a US machine balks at getting an INTL code that would never be sent
on the US KB.
What does one call the 0x61 INtl PS/2 key? PS2_KEY_????

Well, Microsoft calls 42 and 45 "Europe 2" and "Europe 1". If you
look
at an image of a 102 key British-layout keyboard, you'll see the
difference- note the extra backslash key to the right of the left shift.
Similarly, note that the backslash key on the US keyboard has been
replaced by a double-high, single-wide ENTER key and that there's a key
with the octothorpe/tide key between quote and ENTER. (Keyboard layout
168).
Call it what you want...
