At a regular Ham Radio Trash and Treasure sale I went to today there was a
HP7910 disk drive at the bottom of a big pile of slow moving stuff that
seems to be there every time.
I didn't grab it because it was too deep, no time etc. Maybe next time.
What system/era would this have been from?

New subject: Qualstar 1052 info?
I picked up a Qualstar 1052 9-track drive at a hamfest this morning. Has
anyone used one of these?
Do I have any hope of using it to read old RSTS, VMS and MUMPS-11 tapes?

How hard should I be kicking myself for not snagging an HP 9000/236 for $30
at a hamfest in Timonium, MD? Did any of the other folks on this list pick
it up?

Tony,
Don't worry about it. They're not that rare. It uses a 8 MHz 68000 and
runs HP BASIC, HPL or Pascal. They're not bad machines but they're big and
heavy and take up a lot of room. The ones to look for are the C or even
better a CU. The C indicates a color monitor and the U indicates a 12.5 MHz
68010 (CU has both). Both are pretty scarce. I have seveal of the beasts.

information about the 9836 and other 9000 200 series computers.

They were introduced in the 1981 HP catalog. It looks like they use a 14"
disk. They have a whopping 12.9 Mb capacity (formatted), 32 sectors/track,
256 bytes/sector, 733 tracks per surface (plus 3 spare tracks), 2 surfaces,
and an average random access time of 70 mS and rotate at 3000 RPM. They
were available in rack mount or a desk top versions. Their cost was $7,950
and $8,350 respectively. Oh yes and they are HP-IB.

If it's any help, we used to use them in our missile test rack attached to an
HP1000 mini all in a rack up until 1995 when the whole rack system was
updated to a rack moounted pentium unit and standard SCSI drives. They are
very touchy about rough handling as well.
