No you can't use a RLL with an MFM controller.

Run length limited verses modulated frequency.

Yes you can. RLL drives work just fine with MFM controllers. The only
"problem" is that you end up with only 2/3 of the stated data space.
FM, MFM, and RLL are all just encoding techniques. RLL is a more efficient
encoding method than MFM just as MFM is more efficient method than FM.
