Hi! It pains me to ask this, what vendors are hobbyists using for low cost,
low quantity prototype PCBs?
I've used Advanced Circuits and they've been pretty good. I would love to
stick with them as their barebonesPCB is a deal. 33each looks interesting
too. However, I am starting to have problems with them unrelated to the
PCBs and am investigating what other sources are available.
I am trying to get some prototype PCBs to evaluate some S-100 boards in
development (S-100 System Monitor Board, S-100 Bus Extender, S-100 Z80 CPU,
etc)
Any ideas? Constructive suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a run recently done by Gold Phoenix
(http://www.goldphoenixpcb.biz/) - 2 layer board, approx 3"x3.5", 100%
through-hole design, no fancy features (it was an 80C52 design that is
now sporting an ATmega8515). I sent them Gerber files from EagleCAD
and they panellized for free - their work size is 155 sq in, so I got
16 boards for $99. For the application at hand, it was a good deal
and I was happy with the results.
Gold Phoenix was recommended to me by the Makerbot guys. I've done
one run and was entirely satisfied. We will probably do a "Rev 2"
through them as well.

Just walked past a pair of RX02's in the garage for the umpteenth time,
and the thought came to me, could I get these badboys hooked up to my
PC??? They are MFM format, should be feasible perhaps with a proper
controller board... maybe.
Anyone ever try such an endeavor? ...and have any success?

I've never tried it, but I know the RX01/RX02 interface pretty
well. It's very easy; it's a bit-serial interface with a few control
lines. One could easily control one with a microcontroller, or it
*might* be able to be bit-banged with a parallel printer port.
I've long considered building a USB<->RX interface; I might just
do that soon.

is actually insife the RX02 chassis. The inteface back to the interface
board in the Unibus/Qbus/Omnibus is a bit-serial one, timed from the RX02
end, and the interface board is essentially a shift register and a little
logic. It should eb quite easy to recreate that and link it to a PC.

OH oh oh yes, that. I think you mean "Dbit has.." but at any rate
that doesn't control RX01/RX02 drives, but it is an adapter that
allows one to connect generic 8" drives and real RX50 drives to a PC
controller. Bit of a different animal.

RX02 working on a PC at all... I've got an Alpha coming soon and it
would be fun to get the drives to work on it :-)

Well, a Catweasel doesn't have any problem with RX02 on a naked 8"
drive, but it may not be what you had in mind. (i.e. writes are
track at a time, as are reads).

Yes. likely the easiest way is using the printer port. The RX02 drive unit
is intelligent and communicates to a bus interface module. Feed it
commands and data and it feeds you results and data.
The details are not worked out but the interface was simple enough that
it was available Unibus(-11 and UVAX), Qbus(-11 and uVAX) and Omnibus(-8).

Andrew, I ordered four 2.1" x 2.85" boards from PCB-Pool for $50 +
shipping. They're in Germany. You can pick a no-frills board that
doesn't use a silk screen or solder mask. They an easy to use online
quoting tool as well.
