  out of all the years I owned Computer Exchange Inc. I
had only one 7970 hp
 tape drive that  would read 7 track... even the  ones that only read  7
 track must have been scarce too, or I just never attracted them! 
Are you sure it was a hp 7970 ?
All hp7970 I found are 9-track ...
