Yes, mixed VMS clusters were quite common during the transition era from
Vax to Alpha, and there are still a few about.
Probably be some more when I finally get hold of an Alpha or two...

Yes, you can have a Mixed architecture cluster. One of these days I expect
we'll start to see mixed architecture clusters of VAXen, Alphas, and iA64
systems.
