Rumor has it that Fred Cisin (XenoSoft) may have mentioned these words:
But how do I lobotomize that silly
"HYPER-TERMINAL" app in Windoze95 to
convince it that I do NOT want it to dial, wait for carriertone, etc.?
I've found the best way to force HyperTerminal to do this is tell it to
dial a stupid number like "876" and when it starts out to dial, just click
cancel. it knocks you back to the terminal screen, but leaves the
connection to the com port open.
Or, do as I do: grab your trusty Tandy 200 with the attitude of "Screw
WinBlows - this works better!"

Actually, the best way is to upgrade to a later version of HyperTerminal
Personal Edition (PE). It's a free upgrade for the brain-dead version
that ships with Win 95/98/NT and adds nice features like the above and
also telnet capability.
Check your local search engine for a link.

Or use a decent termulator. I normally use WRQ's Reflection,
but recently started playing with the freeware Zebra (comes with source
code) at: http://www.coastal.net.au/~ewan/
It's aimed at simulating an HP 700/92, not a DEC terminal.

I must be missing something, on my Hyperterminal I just select "Direct to
COMx:" and configure the baud rate and parity stuff. No modem crap at all.

Best solution: A real VT420 with dual input
Second best solution: Ancient laptop running DOS and Telix
Third best solution: 486 or better running OS/2 and TE/2
Basically NOTHING beats a real terminal, and I'm rather partial to the VT420's.

Personally, I prefer to use my WYSE VT100 terminal.. got it at the Daytom
HAMVention 2 years ago for $20 or $25 and it works great.. I've used it on
my p166 Linux box, my SparcII (now running Linux 2.3.4 kernel, yay!) and
on a modem when my computer has crashed.

This is still insane. Visit www.tucows.com and download the programs that
Windows should have come with in the first place, instead of the
brain-dead schlock you get with a stock install.
Or, if you want, I can send you a copy of ProcommPlus for DOS that works
under Windows. Its my old trusty friend. Easy to use, easy to configure,
solid.
