The SCSI connector on the back tends to be flaky on the
MicroVAX 3100s?

Not really. Older 3100s used the 50pin cannon connector which is
standard
for SCSI-I and SCSI-II. The later 3100s like the M76 used the oddball
68pin HDB,
and I'd add long before PCs did!
I know this as I have a bunch of 3100s and.
