Hello, all:
Well, my latest spare-hardware-using project (while I'm waiting for
parts for other projects to come) is an MP3 server. But I'm torn as to what
OS to use. I was going to use NT Server with Internet Information Server so
that I could serve up a dynamic clickable catalog. The I thought that I'd
just make a simple shared drive and use Media Player to create and manage
playlists. Then I thought maybe this would be perfect for Linux with Samba
and Apache.
So, here's the question...if you were setting-up a networked MP3
player in your house, how would you do it? hardware's not the question --
just software.

Well [for me] that's easy. Use Linux, there are a few MP3-server type
projects out there that use it. If not, you can always 'pretty easily'
write a few pages up in PHP using either Apache or thttpd to do whatever
you want to do dynamically. Plus, you can sever them over the network
to Winderz boxen using Samba [www.samba.org], Unix Boxen (Like your
On Topic SparcStation IPC) and even your VAXen. :) Even share to your
(Again OT) Mac IIsi using Netatalk.
Most of the software listed above comes with just about every Linux distro
out there. If you want more help, talk to your local-area Linux Users
Group, they're always happy to help. You might consider searching
slashdot [slashdot.org] for MP3 things that have been featured on it, or
freshmeat [freshmeat.net], which is about the largest repository of
Linux and free software around.

Actually one of my projects recently has been working on a semi-embedded
linux for Dreamcast for just this purpose. I have this whole "usability"
hangup though so I still have a lot of work left.

I'm not a linux bigot. I only use it if it suits my needs. That said, I
already had a (small) investment in linux.
The "usability" thing doesn't have anything to do with linux, and has
everything to do with appliance-izing MP3s next to my TV (and,
consequently, my stereo).
