Kidding of course, thanks much for that. It's a bit to digest, and I'm
still going to hold out for the correct unit for a while (mostly because I
don't think I have any appropriate drive mechanisms to use anyway,
anymore).

They are not quite generic drives, but if you put a 5.25" DS/DD type
drive in an external enclosure and used a cable you can make it work.
Note that the connector on the EX is 30 PIN. The 34 PIN port is the
parallel interface.
Coming from the EX you will have to disconnect the following pins:
2, 4, 6, 8 (+5v) and 1, 3, 28, 30 (+12v) You can wire this to actually
power the drive. Get an old 4 pin Molex connector from an old power
supply.
Connect 2,4,6,8 up to red
Connect 1,3,28,30 to yellow
Connect 5,7,9 to the blacks
5,7,9,11,13,18,22,24,26 on the EX are all ground and should go to 1, 3,
5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23,25, 27, 29, 31, 33
Now, here should be the rest:
Then you have to do a little "cross over" somehow. I've done it with
perf board and by twisting, soldering and insulating the connections.

The Tandy external drives were powered over the floppy cable for the
ex/hx and several others.
