By the way... I've got an old Commodore SX-64 that seems to have a raster but no working CPU. Was there a common failure mode for these?

I can't remember which chips to start with and not having a C64 in front of me, I can't tell you, but just start on one end and work your way to the other. I'm sure someone else here can provide more specific information. If this doesn't work then you might suspect a bad RAM chip which you'll usually have to resort to soldering in order to replace.
