I've got a Panasonic JU-455-5 AAG (5.25, 360K) that I'd like to use in a
Kaypro 4. I've worked out the configuration of the drive based on a
snippet of info on the net that had some jumper settings, but I can't get
the activity light to operate. I've set the configuration to use the
light when either motor on is detected, or the drive select, but neither
seem to work. I figure a "real" manual on the drive would help.
Note that the drive seems to operate without issue other than the drive
light. Boots, etc.

Can't help with those manuals. Gave them away long ago.
But, be aware that that same drive was also sold as the Shugart 455,
Matsushita 455, and National?
The Shugart printing of the manual should be more readily available.
Other variants, that should be the same for THIS issue include
465 : "720K" 96tpi double density
475 : "1.2M" 96tpi high density; I don't remember whether the 475 was a
dual speed version

In addition to what Fred mentioned, there are some drives that employ
the "in Use" line to allow the host to illuminate the drive. I've got a
couple of YE Data drives that behave in this manner. On 8" drives, this
corresponds to "Head Load". It's pin 4 on the interface and is
active-low. You could probably tie it to the appropriate "drive select"
pin.

I would assume that the jumper configuration I'd set would have done that
- it has two settings, "UA" - front led handled by the In Use signal and
"DA" - front led handled by the Drive Select signal. My K4 has a pair of

hassle of pulling a drive out in order to see if the jumper settings
match. :) It may come to that though.

If that's the right schematic, it should be easy enough to debug.

usually just designated the color of bezel and who it was made for, if part
of a large OEM run.
