Wire recorders predated tape recorders. They were in use from the early
1930s, as I recall.
An excellent person to contact on this subject is Jonathan Winter of the
Bellingham (WA) Antique Radio Museum. You can reach him at
jwinter(a)pacficirim.net, tell him Kevin sent you! He has some examples of
wire recorders in his collection.
