I have an SMS dual 8 inch floppy unit, model FWT05, but I don't have the
SMS controller.
This unit seems to have two Shugart 801's and some kind of interface board
inside. Connection is thru the back via a 40 pin cable. I think this unit
does the disk formatting and talks to the PDP11 through a simple interface
card like the one you have. I just got this off ebay but it may be what
you are looking for.
I could take some pictures and post them, there are some SMS manuals on
bitsavers.org, BTW.
