Hi,
Throw some ideas at me. I've got an old 4.5" B&W portable television which I
can use for something fun, such as a portable Pong game, portable TRS-80, or
whatever.
What would you like seen done with it? I'm all ears.

I've seen some hacks for converting it to a vector monitor.

With an embedded CRT controller (e.g. 6845) and some memory you could build
an tiny / cool / goofy terminal ;-) You probably also need a small CPU in it.
Attach a mini keyboard, build it together in one housing, wrote some software.
AFAIK, the vt4 project from Bob Armstrong connects to a VGA monitor. Pity,
because the vt4 will also connect a PS/2 keyboard.
Maybe a vt4 plus VGA->composite conversion?

I've not looked at the data on that chip, but I would be suprised if
there wasn't some hack to feed composite video in somewhere. Maybe into
the pin where the output of the IF filter connects or something.
Of course you could make an amplitude-modulated oscillator at the IF
frequency and feed that into the input of the chip (remove the tuner),
but that seems like too much work :-)
I obulf a little TV a few years ago with the intention of adding a
composite input and having it on my workbench to test home computers with
RF output and also displaying composite video. With a 5" or so CRT it's
limited ot 40 column text but it's still useful for testing.
I didn't do the mod in the end. Mainly becuase I noticed a pair of RCA
phono sockets on the back, one for composite video in, the other for
line-level audio in. They're the sort of sockets with internal NC
switches that disconnect the output of the TV detector whrn you stick a
plug in. Not ideal, but useable.

In a way, I'm sort of in the same boat. I've got a nice old
Emerson "portable" 5 inch color TV here that also has an AM/FM
broadcast receiver built in. Takes a sealed lead-acid 12v battery
pack. TV tuning is continuous over 3 bands.
After the switch to DTV, it'll be good for a radio only. I've
thought about using it for a mini CGA-type display, but that seems a
little ridiculous, considering the size of the whole luggable thing.
